What are Divergent Boundaries?
"This Dynamic Earth:
The Story of Plate Tectonics"
By W. Jacuelyne Kious and
Robert I. Tilling
When two or more tectonic plates are pulling away from each other, the boundary between them is called divergent. As they move away from each other the space in between is filled in with an upward movement of the mantle which forms new crust. This upheaval of the mantle is normally volcanic in nature and the new crust becomes a new tectonic plate and acts separately from the other two plates that are moving away from each other.
Examples of Divergent Boundaries is seen throughout the Atlantic Ocean and on the Island Nation of Iceland.
