What is Normal Movement?
Diagram from Oracle Education Foundation, ThinkQuest, World Winds.
Normal movement, if there is such a thing, is when the movement of the earthquake along the fault line is in a downward fashion. As depicted in the diagram, the earth is sheering on a downward plane at the fault line between the tectonic plates boundaries. This drop in the earth is the most common effect on the surface of the earth and therefore has been determined to the 'normal' movement of an earthquake; hence the term normal movement.
